Youth Programming


Check it out!!!  Are you between the age of 5 and 18?  Then we have some thing for you.  We have Homework programs, Recreational programs, Leadership programs, and Volunteer programs.  If you are looking for fun, friends, and a great experiences then this is a good place to start.  Some programs are here at the South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, but we also do a number of programs off site at schools and with community partners.  Be sure to check more in our children’s programs and special events sites.

The Youth Ambassador program is a provincial program through AMSSA (Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Service Agencies) that has adapted the Safe Harbour Program for children and youth.  Youth receive training in order to lead workshops for children surrounding the ideas of diversity and increasing awareness of the Safe Harbour decal. 

If you are a youth in grades 9-12 interested in becoming a Youth Ambassador or if you are a teacher or other caring adult interested in your group of children in grades 4-7 receiving a workshop, please contact us at 604-324-6212.

Homework Havens

Offered for children/youth who are looking for help with their studies or just needing a place to do their homework. Students receive assistance from trained SVNH staff and volunteers. Program includes one hour of homework and thirty minutes recreation time. Snacks and drinks are also provided.

Monday - MacKenzie School, 3:05-4:45, Gr.4-7
Monday - Tecumseh School, 3:00-4:45, Gr. 4-7
Tuesday - Moberly School, 3:11-4:45, Gr.4-7
Wednesday - Cook & MacCorkindale Schools 3:05-4:45, Gr.4-7
Thursday - Fleming School, 3:05-4:45, Gr.4-7

Cost:  $20.00/school term (approximately 8-10 weeks)

Youth Action Program

A volunteer opportunity to work with SVNH programs. Volunteers must come to an orientation in September or January and be willing to volunteer for a full school term. Exceptions for specific programs and special events.

Summer Youth Volunteer Orientation - Monday, June 28th, 3:30-5:30 p.m. - open to any returning secondary school students or new 2010 grads.

Cultural Buddy Program

This program “buddies” up new immigrant secondary and elementary school youth with more established immigrant secondary school youth speaking the same first language.  Both on-site and off-site activities planned.  Serves Fleming, Tecumseh, Douglas and Cook Elementary Schools, David Thompson and Killarney Secondary schools and is scheduled to begin in October and continue until May.

Location:  South Vancouver Neighbourhood House

One afternoon a week with other special activity days on occasion.

Cost:  FREE with $2.00 SVNH annual membership

For BC Housing residents only.

Off-site program that provides resident youth with recreational, social and educational after-school programming.

Champlain Place - Mon/Fri. 3:00-5:00 p.m. and Friday 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Culloden Court - Wed. & Thurs 3:00-5:00 p.m.

SVNH Leo's Club

Youth service club sponsored by the South Vancouver Lions Club. This programs teaches leadership skills, provides experience and opportunities to participate in community service.

Junior Leadership Program

Junior Leadership for ages 13-15 years introduces youth to leadership development, volunteerism, employment readiness and childcare skills. Program runs 9 consecutive Tuesdays from June to August. Participants are also expected to volunteer 2 days/week at Hello World Day Camp during the summer.

COST: $70.00
Membership required ($2.00)

Students receive a $40.00 honorarium on successful project completion.

Leadership Program

Please check back in December for 2010 program details.

Sponsored by the Association of Neighbourhood Houses for Gr. 10 and 12 students.  This several weeks program from January to April provides training for working with children.  Some weekend overnight training workshops provided at various locations including Sasamat Outdoor Centre.  Graduates of this program are often hired on as summer day camp counsellors at various Neighbourhood Houses.

Location:  South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, 6470 Victoria Drive

One evening a week, various weekends and several volunteer opportunities during the duration of the program.

COST: TBA for 2010

There are other costs for workshops and weekend training programs.
