SVNH provides many volunteer opportunities for people of all ages. Volunteers help with reception, cooking, maintenance, program leadership and more. We especially look for committed volunteers to help with youth programs such as Daycamp, Out-of-School care, special events, off-site homework and tutoring programs, data entry and poster making.

SVNH welcomes, values and relies heavily on volunteers. Volunteers are encouraged to become actively involved with the many different activities that encompass the total Neighbourhood House operation and our connections with the South Vancouver community.

SVNH invites potential volunteers to explore the various programs & activities where volunteers are providing services, prior to making any formal commitment.

Persons wishing to volunteer will meet with staff to discuss needs, interests, volunteer time-commitments, responsibilities, expectations, etc. Provided there is a mutually-agreeable decision to proceed, the volunteer will complete a written application, complete the Criminal Record Check form, and, with the staff supervisor, complete a written volunteer-job description and work-hour schedule.

With the exception of the Volunteer Board of Management, each volunteer has a designated staff supervisor who is responsible to provide the volunteer with initial orientation and ongoing support, direction, and supervision. The staff supervisor will also ensure that any needed training is provided.

Volunteers will be oriented to, and expected to adhere to SVNH’s health and safety practices. Volunteers are also introduced to and expected to adhere to policies and practices concerning ethical behaviour, maintaining confidentiality, rights to make complaints, etc.

Volunteers have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities, and to learn new skills. Volunteers are included in program planning. Their individual contributions to SVNH are formally recognized at annual volunteer recognition events.

Please feel free to contact us or come in to see us any time for more information. Look over the various programs we offer under the headings above to see if anything is of specific interest to you.
