NEWS - Welcome Zahra, Our New Executive Director

Zahra Esmail is proud to join SVNH. She has a background in community development and microfinance. Zahra has worked with marginalized populations across the globe for many years. She has extensive experience with participatory development and community-led project design and implementation, and has lived and worked in Canada, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean. Zahra is passionate about sustainable development and finding practical, long-term solutions to systemic issues that can be taken to scale. 

Most recently, Zahra was the general manager of Eva’s Phoenix, a transitional shelter for homeless and at-risk youth operated by Eva’s Initiatives. She has worked with Street Kids International, Haven Haiti, BRAC, Junior Achievement of British Columbia, and the YMCA of Greater Vancouver. She holds a Masters in Globalization and International Development from the University of Ottawa, a Bachelors in History from the University of British Columbia, and an Associate Certificate in Fundraising Management from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. 

Zahra lives with her husband, 19-month-old daughter, and cat. She enjoys reading novels, playing squash, snorkelling, and snowboarding. Zahra is well-traveled. Her favourite destinations are Angel Falls in Venezuela, Machu Picchu in Peru, and Varkala Beach in India.

Zahra is a trained Indian classical dancer who grew up performing at Punjabi market celebrations and other events at Fraserview Hall.
