NEWS - "It's Never Too Late" - Jagjit's Story

My name is Jagjit Kaur Mann.  I believe that those things which you couldn't do in your whole life can be done now when you are a senior.  It is never too late.

I did not upgrade my music and computer skills when I was young.  When I was 46 years old, I did my 12 grade with my daughter.  Then three years later, I received a Bachelors of Art degree with my daughter and two years later my Masters in Economics, also with my daughter.  So for six years, we studied together.  At that time, my oldest son was in University getting a Bachelor of Commerce Degree.  My younger son was in school at that time.  At the age of 54 years, I did my classical music training.  I learned to play harmonium instrument and sing in accompaniment.  During this time, I was employed at a government office in New Delhi.  I learned to type when I was 16 years of age, and the computer at the age of 64 years.

I started volunteering at the age of 50 years when I landed in Canada.  I stopped feeling lonely when I joined SVNH.  I learned about different cultures and races. I came to know about their customs, dress and festivals.  I even learned their dances, songs, foods, likes and dislikes.  I gave my recipe of Aaloo Gobi to Lorna Gibbs.  She included it in her recipe book along with my picture.  I got chances to show my talent of singing and storytelling to my south Asian group and other groups too. We went to new places on trips like Chemanis, Victoria and Fort Langley etc.

I got a chance to personally attend the volunteering award ceremony of SVNH in Vancouver’s City Hall along with SVNH staff and Mayor Gregor Robertson. It has become a memory for me.  I am very grateful to SVNH because by being a member, I had the chance to act in the DVD “Healthy Eating for Seniors” made by Knowledge Network for Health Ministry. I even earned some money and felt proud of being in this project. The staff at SVNH are very friendly and I feel at home when I am there.  Every week I wait eagerly to go there.

Never think it is impossible or too late to learn anything because you are a senior or getting older.  NO. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE.  What you need is a desire to learn and willingness to work hard.   Please accept these words of encouragement when you read this message.  You are capable of achieving whatever you want at any age.  Thank you for your kind attention.
