Building Welcoming and Inclusive Neighbourhoods Project

South Vancouver Neighbourhood House staff, volunteers and participants host the June 30, 2008 press conference and official launch of the Building Welcoming and Inclusive Neighbourhoods Project.
The Honorable Wally Oppal, Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism made the announcement. Funding is provided through the Ministry of the Attorney General Settlement and Multiculturalism Division.
This three year pilot program identifies best practices in welcoming neighbourhoods among a consortium of 12 neighbourhood houses in the Vancouver Lower Mainland.
Over the course of the project, SVNH will be working in partnership with the community using an integrated volunteer team model approach. The project will involve participants of the Seniors as Leaders and Safe Harbour projects as well as other community members to play as a “Neighbourhood Welcome Wagon” bridging role for newcomers and isolated residents and helping them establish functional ties with people in the community.
The project will encompass various activities in the forming of capacity building; for example, community forums, cultural celebrations, international family dinners, field trips, co-learning activities, intergenerational mentorships, etc. Our goal is to engage people to make our neighbourhood a healthier and more vibrant place. In part, it is also about helping local champions to gain skills so they have a complete "toolbox" for improving the community they call home - a sense of belong.

_______________________
Safe Harbour is a BC-wide program that creates an environment where all members of our community feel welcomed and safe. Since 2006, South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH) has been both a Safe Harbour Community Organizer and a Safe Harbour site. Local Safe Harbour networks provide a resource to local businesses and agencies to be better prepared to serve an increasingly diverse staff and clientele. Being a Community Organizer means that SVNH is recruiting and training local businesses on an ongoing basis to become Safe Harbour sites. If you ever feel you have been treated unfairly or discriminated against, you can find temporary refuge in one of the Safe Harbour sites. Look for the Safe Harbour decal to find local Safe Harbour sites! Visit http://www.safeharbour.ca/ for more info.
Contact South Vancouver Neighbourhood House at 604-324-6212 to set up a training session if you want to become a Safe Harbour site!
South Vancouver "First Cup" Kiosk
Operated by SVNH at 41st Avenue & Victoria Drive, our First Cup Kiosk functions as a volunteer training program, teaching cash register use, espresso machine and customer service skills. This program is a great volunteer experience for those wanting to get into the customer service field. It has also become a wonderful addition to the neighbourhood.
For more information Contact Eda at the Kiosk (604)324-1562 or call Wei Wei at SVNH at (604)324-6212.
A very special thank you to the Alexandra Foundation whose generous donation allowed us to purchase a much needed new coffee machine and do some other improvements to the Kiosk this past year.

The Neighbourhood Circle Project is holding a series of community dialogues about issues of community inclusion and racism and will develop an anti-racism action plan or strategy for South Vancouver neighbourhoods. This project, being led by SVNH, is a unique anti-racism initiative which is neighbourhood-based and youth led. Trained youth from the community will engage a broad cross-section of the population of South Vancouver in cross-cultural dialogues. The dialogue sessions will be followed by youth-led one day anti-racism workshops in the community. * Great opportunity to participate in cross-cultural dialogues & to learn how to build a safer neighbourhood |
