Adult Programs

 

SVNH offers programs, services and volunteer opportunities for adults within our South Vancouver community, and always welcomes new members. Feel free to telephone – or even just drop by – for program or resource information, for one of our services or activities, or for a cup of coffee and a chat.


Settlement Services: 

SVNH provides one-to-one assessments and referrals for newcomers who require assistance with their settlement needs. Settlement Workers are available at the Neighbourhood House in Chinese, Punjabi, Hindi, Vietnamese, French, and Korean and some other languages on a limited basis.

Program List:

Labour Market Volunteer Placement for Newcomers
Work placement service to help newcomers gain pre-employment skills and experience in the job market in a volunteer capacity.  This is a pilot project under the Vancouver Area Immigrant Services Toward Adaptation Consortium Program (VISTA), a settlement and integration program serving the South Vancouver community.Participants will be given orientation and training (conflict resolution, volunteerism and labour rights and responsibilities).  Participants may also obtain a reference letter or work reference upon completion of the program.Participants agree to commit to 40-120 hours of volunteer (unpaid) service to gain work experience in the following areas:  administration, customer service, fast food, retail, working with children/immigrants/seniors or more as opportunities arise. Community ESL Class
For beginners 18 years and older.  Level of English competency not important, but you do need to be able to read English and you must be willing to join in conversations with the rest of the class. More >>


Aboriginal Women's Group
This women's group will consist of an introduction, sharing circle, relationships, friendships, families, boundaries, journaling and collage, getting to know yourself and spirituality. More >>


Income Tax Clinics
Income tax preparation by trained volunteers for low income earners only. More >>


Legal Assistance Clinic
Sponsored by the UBC Law Students' Legal Aid Program, the service is offered one evening a week during the winter months and two to three days a week during the summer. More >>


Basic English Conversation Classes
Drop-in English conversation class for adults. More >>


ELSA English Class
ELSA stands for English Language Services for Adults.  The ELSA program provides basic level English training for adult newcomers to Canada and is funded by the BC Provincial Government.  Eligibility criteria and assessment is required before registration.  More >>
