Settlement Services:
SVNH provides one-to-one assessments and referrals for newcomers who require assistance with their settlement needs. Settlement Workers are available at the Neighbourhood House in Chinese, Punjabi, Hindi, Vietnamese, French, and Korean and some other languages on a limited basis.

This service for immigrants and newcomers is an employment initiative designed to help unemployed immigrants and refugees to successfully develop necessary tools and skills to assist in finding employment.

Program includes:
* assessment and job action plan
* resume writing
* business letter writing
* job search technique
* practicum work placement
* one-on-one employment counselling

One-to-one sessions: by appointment

Cost: Free
with SVNH membership

Participants must have some knowledge of English

Spanish Women's Support Group

Open to immigrant women and newcomers who wish to practice speaking English in a group setting and break isolation.

  • helping participants to improve English-speaking skills
  • building support network among group
  • access information about health and social benefit programs
  • sharing cultural differences

Various on-site programs and services offered. Worker speaks Vietnamese, Cantonese, French and English

  • Vietnamese Women's Support Group - Fri. 5:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Children's Vietnamese Language Classes and various tutoring programs - Fri. 5:30-8:00 p.m.
  • ESL fee-based classes - Fri. 6:30-8:30 p.m. (as well as other days periodically)
  • French homework help - Fri., 5:00-6:00 p.m. and Sat. 10:00-11:00 a.m.
  • labour market services - resumes, job search, etc.

Family Support and Domestic Violence Program

This program provides support whether it is emotional or practical for women experiencing gender based violence in their relationships or those who have had previous violence in their relationships. Information and referral to other agencies for further support is also offered along with safety planning, as well as support for children and the abuser/partner if he requires support and counselling. Women can self refer as can agencies on their behalf. There is no cost. Services are confidential. The worker engages in outreach and can meet the women where they feel comfortable. This program also offers education and awareness to organizations regarding women and violence. Consultation with other service providers is available.

Volunteer Training Program at First Cup Kiosk

The kiosk is used to train unemployed persons with multiple barriers to employment such as new immigrants and youth-at-risk. Kiosk trainees learn customer service and espresso coffee preparation skills. New immigrants have the chance to improve their English as well as gain other employment skills.

ELSA English Classes

Provincial government funded classes for new immigrants to Canada.

Half days Mondays to Thursdays from September to June (continual intake). Level 1 and Level 2 are offered. Level 1 ELSA class now being offered evenings Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Legal Assistance Clinic

Sponsored by the UBC Law Students' Legal Aid Program, the service is offered one evening a week during the winter months and two to three days a week during the summer. LSLAP is a non-profit organization that offers free legal advice for low income earners throughout the Lower Mainland. Volunteer UBC law students, working under the guidance of supervising lawyers, provide legal expertise in various areas of law including criminal matters, small claims, residential tenancy and much more.

Income tax preparation by trained volunteers for low income earners only. Will do only basic returns.

Aboriginal Women's Group

This women's group will consist of an introduction, sharing circle, relationships, friendships, families, boundaries, journaling and collage, getting to know yourself and spirituality.
