Settlement Services:
SVNH provides one-to-one assessments and referrals for newcomers who require assistance with their settlement needs. Settlement Workers are available at the Neighbourhood House in Chinese, Punjabi, Hindi, Spanish, Vietnamese, French, German and some other languages on a limited basis.

Annual Membership Fee:

Adults $4.00

 

Pre-Employment Program for Newcomers & Immigrants

13 week program open to newcomers to Canada looking to find employment, but not sure of the process. This program includes work experience opportunities and a certificate of completion as well as a letter of recommendation after work experience is complete.

Program includes:

  • resume writing
  • business letter writing workshop
  • job search technique workshop
  • job interview skills workshop
  • field trip and potluck celebration
  • practicum work experience
Information Sessions: Wednesdays 1:00 - 3:00
One-to-one sessions: by appointment

Cost: Free
with SVNH membership

Participants must have some knowledge of English

Multicultural Women's Support Group

Open to immigrant women and newcomers who wish to practice speaking English in a group setting and break isolation.

  • helping participants to improve English-speaking skills
  • building support network among group
  • access information about health and social benefit programs
  • sharing cultural differences

Multilingual Information & Referral Program

Are you looking for volunteer opportunities? Learn how to recognize the needs of newcomers and how to help them find services and programs. This program provides volunteers who can speak English and another language fluently with opportunities to develop skills in: reception, customer service, networking and the settlement field.

Four weeks of training provided (once a week).
Skills required: must have working knowledge of English and one other language.
Commitment: minimum of 4 months at 4 hours/week

ELSA English Classes

Provincial government funded classes for new immigrants to Canada.

Half days Mondays to Thursdays from September to June (continual intake). Level 1 and Level 2 are offered. From September 2008 evening class will also be offered.

Domestic Violence Support

Community-based program to enhance the effectiveness of the mother’s efforts to keep herself and her children safe from domestic violence in the home.  Services include counseling, education, advocacy, information, group activities and connecting to community resources.

Legal Assistance Clinic

Sponsored by the UBC Law Students' Legal Aid Program, the service is offered one evening a week during the winter months and two to three days a week during the summer. LSLAP is a non-profit organization that offers free legal advice for low income earners throughout the Lower Mainland. Volunteer UBC law students, working under the guidance of supervising lawyers, provide legal expertise in various areas of law including criminal matters, small claims, residential tenancy and much more.

Income Tax Clinics

Income tax preparation by trained volunteers for low income earners only. Will do only basic returns.
